Gustavo Dudamel accents the colours, rhythms, and passion of music by leading composers from Argentina in this invigorating evening under the stars.

ASTOR PIAZZOLLA revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. He composed more than 300 tangos, numerous film scores and orchestra concerts. Tangazo reflects Piazzolla’s dark vision of a tango. The concerto combines influences of Bartók, Villa-Lobos as well as Piazzolla’s passion for Bach and jazz music.

Among the leading lights of 20th-century concert music in South America, Argentina’s ALBERTO GINASTERA is acknowledged for his successful blending of indigenous music with the more rigorous elements of European art music.

Over a career extending over more than half a century, Ginastera would eventually leave behind the folk idiom and write in more contemporary styles, even adopting the twelve-tone system in his later scores. His most frequently played works, not surprisingly, are from the earlier period of his career, and they are reminiscent of the “folkloric” music of other composers who mined the riches of Latin American source material.

LALO SCHIFRINs best known works are the scores of Mission : Impossible and Dirty Harry. His music is a synthesis of traditional and twentieth-century techniques, and his early love for jazz and rhythm are strong attributes of his style. He composed his Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra for Ángel Romero. The world premiere of the Concerto de la Amistad is again dedicated to Ángel Romero’s art of guitar.
