Gustavo Dudamel ac­cents the colours, rhythms, and pas­sion of mu­sic by leading composers from Argentina in this invig­orating evening under the stars.

ASTOR PIAZZOLLA rev­olution­ized the tra­ditional tango into a new style termed nuevo tango, incorporating el­e­ments from jazz and classical mu­sic. He composed more than 300 tan­gos, nu­mer­ous film scores and or­chestra concerts. Tangazo reflects Piazzolla’s dark vi­sion of a tango. The concerto combines influ­ences of Bartók, Villa-Lobos as well as Piazzolla’s pas­sion for Bach and jazz mu­sic.

Among the leading lights of 20^th-centu­ry concert mu­sic in South America, Argentina’s ALBERTO GINASTERA is acknowl­edged for his successful blending of indigenous mu­sic with the more rig­or­ous el­e­ments of Eu­ropean art mu­sic.

Over a ca­reer ex­tending over more than half a centu­ry, Ginastera would eventually leave behind the folk id­iom and write in more con­temporary styles, even adopting the twelve-tone system in his lat­er scores. His most frequently played works, not surpris­ingly, are from the earli­er pe­riod of his ca­reer, and they are rem­i­n­is­cent of the “folkloric” mu­sic of oth­er composers who mined the riches of Latin American source ma­te­rial.

LALO SCHIFRINs best known works are the scores of Mis­sion : Impos­sible and Dirty Harry. His mu­sic is a synthesis of tra­ditional and twentieth-centu­ry techniques, and his early love for jazz and rhythm are strong attributes of his style. He composed his Concerto for Gui­tar and Or­chestra for Án­gel Romero. The world pre­miere of the Concerto de la Amistad is again ded­icated to Án­gel Romero’s art of gui­tar.
