FROM THE SILENT NIGHT CHAPEL
AND THE PILGRIMS CHURCH MARIA BÜHEL IN OBERNDORF
"Silent Night, Holy Night" (German: Stille Nacht, heilige Nacht) is the most popular Christmas carol, composed in 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber to lyrics by Joseph Mohr in the small town of Oberndorf bei Salzburg, Austria. The Mexican star tenor Rolando Villazón sings the song where it was first performed on Christmas Eve 1818 in Oberndorf, a village on the Salzach river.
Mr. Villazón is accompanied by the beautiful young voices of the “Salzburger Festspiele und Theater Kinderchor”, the children’s chorus of the Salzburg Festival performing traditional Christmas carols from Austria, Germany, France and Italy.
